Florida State fired its coach and owes him a buyout
Florida State University fired Mike Norvell, its football coach, on Sunday, a day after a home loss to Clemson, AP reports. The public university now owes him a buyout on a contract that runs through 2031.
Why it matters: Florida State is a public university, and no record from FSU, its trustees or Seminole Boosters yet says whose money pays the buyout. Seminole Boosters is the FSU booster group to which Norvell is giving $4.5 million, 247Sports reports. No record we read shows whether that gift pays any of the buyout. AP and CBS Sports put it at about $47 million to $49 million and say it could shrink if Norvell lands another job.
The story so far: In November 2025, in a season that ended with five wins and seven losses, Florida State kept Norvell for one more year. Had it fired him then, it would have owed him a buyout of nearly $54 million, AP reported.
What Florida State announced
FSU President Richard McCullough told Norvell on Sunday afternoon that the university was changing the leadership of its football program, effective immediately, FSU said in a release. Rick Stockstill, a member of the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame, is interim head coach, and FSU will begin a national search for a new coach.
Norvell's seven seasons at Florida State end with a record of 41-39, the release says. He led the Seminoles to an ACC championship in 2023 behind a 13-0 record. They are 3-5 this season after missing bowl games in each of the past two seasons. AP reports they are 10-22 since the start of the 2024 season, after the 36-24 loss to Clemson.
Stockstill was the Seminoles' quarterback from 1977 to 1981 and spent 18 years as head coach at Middle Tennessee State, the release says. He is in his third season on FSU's staff. Florida State plays at Boston College on Saturday. FSU also fired defensive coordinator Tony White and safeties coach Evan Cooper, ESPN reports.
What the contract is reported to owe
AP puts the buyout at roughly $47 million, 85% of Norvell's remaining salary on a contract that runs through the 2031 season. AP's own opening line rounds it to roughly $50 million. Norvell was scheduled to make $10.3 million in 2026, AP reports, and buying out his assistants would push the total far past $50 million.
CBS Sports says the Seminoles owe him just over $48.6 million. By its account, that is 85% of the last five years of his contract plus $3 million, plus $750,000 under a recently renegotiated buyout agreement. An extension after the 2023 season added two years, through 2031, and he had five years and $54.75 million left on his contract after this year, CBS reports.
ESPN reports the buyout at $50.3 million. Each outlet's figure is its own; we have not seen the contract.
The contract has offset language that would reduce the buyout if Norvell takes another job, AP and CBS report. In 2025, CBS reported that the buyout can be paid in full or in monthly installments through the 2031 season.
Who pays is not on the record
FSU's release does not mention the buyout. Neither AP, CBS Sports nor ESPN says whose money pays it or how it is funded. No FSU, trustees or booster record we read says so either.
The money has a history. Norvell took a one-year pay cut of $4.5 million for the 2025 season to help with potential revenue sharing, CBS reported in 2025. A prorated part of that comes back to him in a buyout, falling by $750,000 a year until 2031. 247Sports reports that Norvell is giving $4.5 million to Seminole Boosters, FSU's booster organization, to launch the athletic department's Vision of Excellence campaign. FSU confirmed the gift is part of an altered contract, 247Sports reports. No record we read shows whether that gift pays for any part of the buyout.
After the 5-7 finish in 2025, the administration, hoping to avoid paying the $50.3 million buyout, kept Norvell for one more season and added roster support, ESPN reports.
A hard fall at FSU
In a letter to fans on Oct. 27, McCullough wrote, "And we are not asking you to believe that everything is fine. We know it is not," AP reported. FSU fired athletic director Michael Alford on Sept. 14. McCullough and trustees chairman Peter Collins named Bruce Warwick interim athletic director, and McCullough wrote that the search for a new athletics director would begin soon, AP reported.
A year earlier, when FSU kept Norvell, Collins said: "We will address performance deficiencies in the program," AP reported in November 2025.
Their side
"We have made the decision to change the leadership of our football program," McCullough said in FSU's release. "We thank Mike Norvell for his commitment and service to Florida State and wish him and his family the very best." He added: "We will conduct a thorough national search for the program's next leader." Of running the coach and athletic director searches at once, McCullough said Sunday, "It's complicated, but we're already on it," the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
What's next
What's next: Florida State plays at Boston College on Saturday, Nov. 7, with Stockstill as interim coach. McCullough has hired Daniel Parker, of a search firm, to lead a pair of concurrent searches, for a football coach and an athletic director, AP and the Tallahassee Democrat report.
